Ever find your self freaked out or in a panic about somethng?? or might I say…ever turn on the TV in the last 10 years? Before I dive into that, I am going to share a word with you…the word for the day is….sensationalism.
According to Wikipedia…
Sensationalism is a manner of over-hyping events, being deliberately controversial, loud, self-centred or acting to obtain attention. It is also a form of theatre.
Sound Familiar: Tired of hearing about ORANGE air quality alerts and the terror alerts we have been under for 10 years, since when does public safety fit inside of a rubric that can be measured?
Am I absolutley NOT claiming that there are not things to me concerned with in the world, like violence, global warming (not a hoax), tsunamis, volcanos, earthquakes, lions, tigers, and bears oh my!
But my point is presentation…sensationalism describes the way that information is presented to us by…those who present news to us…Now it could be argues that those who present the news can present the news however they want, i mean, this is america right! I mean if it werent for freedom of the press, we wouldn’t have the national enquirer, and if there is one thing I stick to it is “to each his/her own”. However, before getting all strung out by another war getting started, a baby hippo falling into a pond at a school, or our most recent natural disaster strikes….I have been practicing taking the responsibility upon myself to receive the information that I need from the “news alert” and let the rest go, so that I can maintain my piece of mind without burying my head completely in the sand…
the whole point is this…You are awesome and smart and totally capable of making up your own mind about things, so keep cool, process whats in front of you and move on.
Big Love, JS
